2021 Spring Virtual Race for PACE: Event & Registration Information
For 15 years, PACE’s Annual Walk of Life was a national event run in partnership with the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada with over 40 cardiac rehabilitation programs hosting local events across Canada to raise funds for ‘Prevention, Education & Cardiovascular Rehabilitation’.
Last year, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated public health restrictions made the decision to cancel the Walk of Life a sensible one. In September 2020, our partner organization, the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada, sadly closed its doors after 55 years.
While PACE’s programming looked a little (a lot) different this past year, our team at PACE has been working hard to continue promote health and well-being through physical activity among our community of 500+ older adults and folks living with chronic disease or disability.
This year, in place of the Annual Walk of Life, which is typically held on McMaster campus, the team at PACE is hosting a Virtual ‘Race for PACE’ the weekend of May 28-30. The event is open to all members of the McMaster and surrounding community, program participants, students, and family and friends of the PACE.
While the Virtual Race is only $10 to register and participate, participants also have the option to donate to support a great cause: McMaster PACE! Help us reach our goal to raise $50,000 and to have 300 participants getting active for PACE the weekend of May 28-30! Every donation is meaningful and greatly appreciated.
Thanks to an anonymous donor, your support will go even further. This very generous PACE supporter will MATCH any donations up to the goal of $50,000. That means, if you give $50, then $100 will go to PACE, and together we could raise up to $100,000!
FAQs
What is a virtual race you ask?
There are no parking problems. No crowds. There’s not even an official starting line! A virtual race is a race you can complete at any location, at your pace, outside or even on your treadmill.
How will it work?
Register online to participate, either individually or in support of a particular fundraising team. The goal is to set a personal target amount of ‘movement minutes’ and work towards it virtually! PACE will have information in their weekly newsletter, on how to get race-ready. The virtual race weekend will take place from May 28-30. PACE will also send you an email with an option to participate in virtual exercise classes via Zoom. Walk, run, wheel, or follow our instructors to reach your activity goal on your own time during that weekend.
(*While participating in exercise and getting your active minutes, please follow safety procedures and Public Health guidelines in your area)
How do I participate?
Register for the virtual race online ($10 registration fee) and set a personal activity goal (in minutes). On race weekend (May 28-30), choose your own starting line, run, walk, or wheel the race to your goal, and share your accomplishment with us! You can share your activity with us live throughout the weekend on social media by posting with the tags @mcmaster.pace (Instagram and Facebook) @McMaster_PACE (Twitter) and #RaceforPACE. At the end of the weekend, we will ask you to upload your total ‘movement minutes’ and a few days later you’ll receive a virtual medal! All participants will also be entered into a draw for some great prizes!
Why participate?
You’ve heard the catch phrases: ‘motion is lotion’, ‘use it or lose it’, and ‘HIIT to get fit’. Some is better than none and more is better than some. Bottom line, we KNOW exercise is good for us. We also know that movement comes in MANY forms. So, let’s get moving together (virtually) for a great cause!
Steps to Participate:
1. Register as an individual or with a specific team ($10 participation fee).
2. Set your activity goal in minutes.
3. Get active from wherever you are the weekend of May 28-30 (*While participating in exercise and getting your active minutes, please follow safety procedures and Public Health guidelines in your area)
4. Submit your ‘movement minutes’ at the end of the weekend, and we will email you a virtual medal! You’ll also be entered into a draw for some great prizes!
Throughout the race weekend, share a photo or video of your activity on Facebook and Instagram: @mcmaster.pace, Twitter: @McMaster_PACE using the #SpringRaceforPACE
