CHOICES—a CIHR Team Grant-funded project led by principal investigator Dr. Andrei Krassioukov from ICORD—brings together leading researchers from across Canada with the aim of improving the lives, health and care of Canadians living with spinal cord injury (SCI). This project will examine cardiovascular (CV) health benefits to individuals with chronic SCI through optimized exercise and targeted education.

Dr. Maureen MacDonald is the lead investigator of the CHOICES multi-centre randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of different exercise modalities for improving CV health. Our Physical Activity Centre of Excellence is a primary research site for this trial. In addition, from the PACE, Dr. Kathleen Martin Ginis leads the CHOICES knowledge translation project. This study will determine whether educating health care providers on specific CV problems associated with SCI can reduce the financial burden of care, and improve treatment of people with SCI. Ultimately, by providing important information on exercise training and targeted education to clinicians, these projects will reduce chronic disease and improve cardiovascular health for Canadians living with SCI.
